Radio 1 announces schedule changes as Greg James gets new slot and Kiss favourite joins

Radio 1 extends Greg James’ Breakfast show for the summer as schedule changes announced

  • Greg James’ Radio 1 Breakfast show will run until 11am from Monday 20 July to Thursday throughout the summer.
  • Rickie, Melvin and Charlie move to an 11am start, while Fridays continue with Radio 1 Anthems hosted by Nat and Vicky.
  • Sam Darlaston has recently joined Radio 1 from Kiss to host Early Breakfast on Fridays throughout July and is expected to take on a bigger role after that.
  • The regular Radio 1 schedule returns from Monday 7 September.

BBC Radio 1 is making temporary changes to its daytime schedule this summer, with Greg James’ Breakfast show extended by an extra 30 minutes to reflect changing listener habits during the school holidays.

From Monday 20 July, Radio 1 Breakfast with Greg James will air from 7am until 11am, Monday to Thursday, giving listeners an extra half hour of Greg’s trademark humour, entertainment and music throughout the summer.

As a result, Rickie, Melvin and Charlie will begin their weekday show at 11am, continuing with the station’s mix of entertainment, music and Live Lounge performances.

On Fridays, Nat and Vicky will continue to present Radio 1 Anthems from 10am until 11am, playing the biggest pop hits from the 2000s, 2010s and 2020s.

Meanwhile, Sam Darlaston has recently joined Radio 1 from Kiss to host Early Breakfast on Fridays throughout July. Industry sources expect him to take on a bigger role at the station once the month-long stint comes to an end.

The station’s usual weekday schedule will return from Monday 7 September, with Greg James back on Breakfast from 7am until 10.30am.

Greg James says: “I took some last minute days off for a destination wedding I had to go to and I need to make the time up to be honest so it feels like 30 mins a day over the summer is a good plan.”

Aled Haydn Jones, Head of BBC Radio 1, says: “We know our younger listeners’ routines change over the summer, so it only makes sense that we’d adjust things too. I’m delighted that Greg will be bringing listeners an extra 30 minutes of Breakfast throughout the summer.”

Away from the schedule changes, Radio 1 will once again broadcast live from some of the summer’s biggest music festivals. Coverage will come from Ibiza, Malta and Reading & Leeds, following earlier broadcasts from Radio 1’s Big Weekend, Download, TRNSMT and Parklife.

Listeners can hear headline performances, backstage interviews and exclusive festival content live on Radio 1 and BBC Sounds every Friday to Sunday from 1pm until 4pm throughout the summer.
